Local Company a National Innovation Award Finalist

Abbyshot Clothiers of Mount Pearl was recently announced as a Finalist for SME Innovator of the Year, one of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters’ Canadian Innovation Awards.  The awards were presented in Toronto on October 16, 2008, and while Abbyshot was not the ultimate award winner, CME-NL congratulates them their selection as a finalist.  Abbyshot was the only Newfoundland & Labrador company, and only one of two from Atlantic Canada, to be recognized as a finalist for one of the six Innovation Awards.

“Newfoundland & Labrador companies always seem to make the cut in these awards,” says CME Vice President Bill Stirling, “Our companies have to be innovative, given the unique challenges operating a business our province.  Previous winners from this province include Rutter, Lotek, and Orphan Industries.”

Abbyshot owner Bonnie Cook was in Toronto for the awards presentation, and was thrilled with her company’s accomplishment.  “For our company to be recognized in this way is tremendous,” said Ms Cook. “To be a finalist among the most innovative companies in the country is an amazing accomplishment for Abbyshot, and is a real tribute to all our staff.  It is also really encouraging to learn that many of the larger firms that were nominated face many of the same challenges that we do in our business.”

Abbyshot Clothiers creates distinctive, extremely high quality, media-inspired clothing. Inspired by great movies and characters like the Matrix, Silent Bob, and even Japanese Anime, their unique products are designed to elevate your wardrobe above the norm.

The Canadian Innovation Awards are presented by each year by CME.  Former Minister of Industry, Finance, Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister John Manley emceed the 2008 event.  “Recognizing the innovative excellence of Canadian companies is a critical part of furthering Canada’s innovation agenda,” says Mr. Manley. “We need to celebrate Canadian success stories to inspire others to take the necessary risks to bring Canada to the innovative forefront.”
